From April 2024 Statutory Maternity Pay (SMP) has increased from £172.48 to £184.03 per week.
SMP is payable to an employee who is employed for a period of 26 weeks continuing into the 15th week before the baby is due. It is payable for up to 39 weeks, starting any time from the 11th week before the baby is due. However, the employee is entitled to take the full 52 weeks of maternity leave (with the last 13 weeks being unpaid).
The amount of SMP payable is 90% of the employees average weekly earnings for the first 6 weeks and £184.03 per week for the remaining 33 weeks for tax year 2024/2025.
SMP is fully recoverable by a small employer, together with an additional 3%.
